Color Names

This is a fundamentally unworkable/misleading approach to naming. For example, these 3 reds are perceptually identical #ff0000, #fe0002, #ff0d00, yet they have different names, which is a waste of names and is worse than having hex-based names (where at least 0.0...1% of people would be able to mix the values in their head and a bigger 0.0..% would see that the difference is tiny), and much worse than having names that are based off Red with some modifier describing the tiny difference based on what it is (e.g., 1% lighter)

> When creating new color names, it's essential to understand which areas of a color space are crowded and where new names can be added

Indeed it is. It's also essential to not add names in those uber-crowded areas

Man, this comment section is not good.

I was surprised recently when I tried to really dial in the colors on my personal website, and found that I perceive and get a different feeling from a hex code change of only 1. I didn’t test whether it’s just me or whether this particular color makes it more visible, but I did test a few monitors, including a bad one. So, I get feeling some way about a specific hex code, if you spent longer picking it than we usually do.

I do, though, wonder what the idea behind assembling a centralized registry is. Is it about making a few favorite very specific colors easier to refer to? Browsing colors? Browsing ideas people have about what colors mean? What would the ideal ultimate form of this list include, every color? What’s the difference between a good name and a bad one?

Amazing! Love the pixel art mode and being able pan and zoom around in 3D. It’s like exploring a world of colors and fun little art pieces and references, like C-3PO’s red arm.

neat concept at first, but after a few clicks - who drew all that pixel art?..

it's all the artists whose work was stolen, isn't it. claude's already in repo too

this is what ruins every other project presented nowadays. i also don't believe it's "years of work" because it can be slopped out quickly today, including the generated names. it'd take an llm mere minutes to come up with names. it's the same how nobody is going to check out a game at the steam next fest past the slop artwork and disclosure - if it's already slop to such an extent there's little reason to believe it's not slop all the way down

Please can you add the colour names used by cars in the post war era.

For example, my father had a Ford Cortina in Saluki Bronze, which sounded better than Polished Turd, so the marketing men went with it, even though the latter was more accurate.

All of the automotive colours had imaginative names then, however, the colour was dependent on light, so a singular RGB value is always a bit naive.

Very impressive presentation, not sure it is a usable tool or a definite resource without Saluki Bronze though.

theres way too much animation. I wanted to be able to click and see some of the names but the spacemountain zoom in and out was so annoying I left this comment instead

Why would I pay you when I could slop out my own colour site? These kinds of things only worked in the age of things being hard. We don’t need to buy pixels anymore.
